Why Opalescence Go

Our preferred whitening approach

We have evaluated many take-home whitening options over the years, and the Ultradent Opalescence Go system has consistently produced excellent results for our patients. We recommend it, keep it in stock at the office, and sell it directly to our patients.

In our experience, the Opalescence Go prefilled trays are easier for patients to use than custom-fitted whitening trays, and the results are at least as good. We typically recommend the 15% hydrogen peroxide option, which is the most popular Opalescence Go formulation.

How it works

Designed for simplicity and effectiveness

Opalescence Go consists of single-use prefilled whitening trays — there is nothing to mix, nothing to load, and no custom tray to fabricate. The trays are made from a unique material called UltraFit that warms with the temperature of your mouth and conforms comfortably to your teeth, providing excellent coverage from molar to molar.

Using Opalescence Go is straightforward:

  1. 1 Remove a tray from the package
  2. 2 Position it on your teeth, bite down gently, and suck on the tray for a few seconds
  3. 3 Remove the colored outer tray, leaving the white inner whitening tray in place
  4. 4 Wear for 15 to 20 minutes
  5. 5 Remove the tray and brush your teeth

That is it. The whitening gel is already in the tray. You do it once a day, typically for five to ten days, and the results are excellent.

Why it works

What makes the system effective

Professional-strength gel.

Opalescence Go uses 15% hydrogen peroxide — a professional-strength concentration that produces meaningfully better results than over-the-counter strips or toothpastes.

Comfortable, conforming trays.

The UltraFit tray material is designed for patient comfort. It conforms to the teeth, holds the gel against the tooth surfaces, and provides full molar-to-molar coverage.

Includes desensitizing ingredients.

Opalescence Go contains potassium nitrate and fluoride. Potassium nitrate has been shown to help reduce sensitivity, and fluoride helps strengthen enamel.

Safe to use over braces.

For patients in orthodontic treatment, Opalescence Go can be used over braces — the whitening agent penetrates the tooth and reaches the area covered by brackets.

Convenient.

Because the trays are prefilled and disposable, you can do your whitening anywhere — at home in the evening, while reading, or even during a commute. There is no setup, no cleanup, and nothing to take care of afterward.

What to expect

Your whitening experience

Most patients see noticeable results within the first few days, with full results developing over five to ten days of consistent use. The teeth whitening process can be repeated periodically as needed to maintain results.

Some patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity during whitening — typically mild and resolving within a few days. The potassium nitrate and fluoride in the Opalescence Go gel are specifically included to help reduce this. If sensitivity becomes an issue, we can recommend additional steps.

Whitening works on natural tooth enamel. It does not change the color of existing dental restorations — fillings, crowns, veneers, or bonded composite. If you have visible restorations on your front teeth, we will discuss how whitening will affect the overall appearance and what to plan for.

Maintenance

How long results last

Whitening results are not permanent. Coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas, certain foods, and tobacco all contribute to gradual re-staining over time. Most patients maintain their results well with periodic touch-ups using additional Opalescence Go trays — typically once or twice a year, as needed.

Good home care and routine dental cleanings extend whitening results significantly.

Frequently asked

Common questions about whitening

Is Opalescence Go safe?

Yes. Ultradent has been making professional-grade whitening products for more than 35 years, and Opalescence is one of the most widely used and well-studied professional whitening brands available. The formulation is designed for patient comfort and safety.

How white can my teeth get?

Results vary based on the starting point and the cause of discoloration. Most patients see significant improvement — often up to several shades brighter. We will discuss realistic expectations at your consultation.

Will whitening damage my enamel?

Properly performed professional whitening does not damage enamel. The hydrogen peroxide works by oxidizing stain compounds without altering tooth structure.

What about sensitivity?

The potassium nitrate and fluoride in Opalescence Go help reduce sensitivity. Some patients experience mild, temporary sensitivity during whitening, which typically resolves shortly after treatment ends.
